I absolutely love New England and shooting weddings here will always be my natural habitat, but when given the opportunity to travel and shoot a wedding I’m always so excited. I have been travelling consistently for work and pleasure really since I was about 16 years old so being able to combine that passion of mine with my other passion, wedding photography, has really been incredible. When Sonny reached out to me to see if I would travel to LA to shoot his and Shelby’s wedding I obviously went right for it.
A little back story to start. Sonny and I actually go pretty far back. He grew up in the same neighborhood as I did in Wakefield, Massachusetts. He was a few years older than I was, but I remember seeing his bands play shows at local V.F.W. halls and social clubs. Now he was living in Los Angeles working in the music industry, where is met his fiancé Shelby who also works in the music industry.
Sonny and Shelby planned the most gorgeous and unique Los Angeles wedding. They started their day off at Hotel Covell in the Los Feliz neighborhood of Los Angeles. A very cool, hip hotel with a great café downstairs. Shelby and her bridal party spent the morning getting ready in their suite with her mother and grandmother. Lots of laughing, coffee and donuts. What more could you ask for? And just on the other side of the hotel was Sonny, his friends and Ace (Sonny and Shelby’s awesome dog). After an amazing morning at the hotel it was off to the venue.
Their venue was Millwick, which is a renovated warehouse space in Downtown LA. The whole space is outfitted with gorgeous greenery. The ceilings of the reception space are the high ceilings you would expect to find in a warehouse. Two large garage doors filled with windows open up to the ceremony area just outside and can be closed off create multiple spaces. Everything came together so perfectly with the expert help of Ashley from Thread Events. Ashley runs Thread Events out of Los Angeles, and she was absolutely amazing to work with. So personable and organized.
After arriving to the venue, we arranged a first look on site. Sonny was absolutely blown away when we saw Shelby. It was quite an incredible moment. Sonny and Shelby chose to exchange their vows in private. We stepped into the bridal suite of the venue so they could be alone. It was a beautiful, intimate moment between the two of them and I tried my best to stay out of the way. After the vows it was ceremony time followed up by the reception. Their ceremony was perfect. Tucked away packed with plants and trees it was hard to believe you were in the heart of DTLA.
Their dinner and reception was just as relaxed and laid back as the rest of the day had been. Appetizers were from the Taco Zone food truck, which was unbelievable. Next up was my personal favorite, which was dinner from In and Out! Taco’s and In and Out?! Really a dream come true. There was also a killer donut bar from Donut Friend. All in all I would say this was one of the best weddings I had the pleasure of working.
